So-called “ultra-high-speed” delivery (UHSD) companies were a staple of the early pandemic metropolitan lifestyle. Apps and services like GoPuff and Instacart offered to have anything from diapers and detergent to cigarettes and beer sitting on your doorstep in 15 minutes or less. Even better, these delivery services minimized customers’ exposure to other risk vectors (read: people) and assisted with effective quarantining. Consequently, the demand for and value of these services exploded overnight. In 2021, InstaCart was valued at $39 billion. In January 2022, GoPuff sought a $40 billion valuation while preparing for its IPO.

Q: What brought you to join the EI&T Committee?
There is no doubt that Emerging Industries and Tech is a sector that touches every part of the legal practice and every part of our clients’ operations. Attorneys who once thought different pieces of technology would fizzle out are now finding themselves behind the eight ball. I wanted to join a committee that would give me access to great tips on how technology can help my practice, but also articles on how courts are grappling with new aspects of technology, like Bitcoin. It’s those issues that are not only a first impression for our courts, but first impressions for us as attorneys in our conference rooms with clients dealing with the same new, unique questions.
