Endowment Donors Enjoy “Vintage” Evening in Los Angeles

On November 5, a capacity crowd of Endowment Fund supporters packed Los Angeles’s Upstairs 2 restaurant to enjoy a special wine-pairing dinner. This popular annual event brings together Los Angeles’s premier wine purveyor — the Wine House — and the elegant culinary creations of Chef de Cuisine Todd Barrie for a multi-course wine-pairing dinner highlighted by seasonal ingredients. The event was organized by the West Coast members of the Regional Development Committee: Chair, Mitchell Ryan (Donlin Recano & Company, Inc.); Co-Chair, Martin R. Barash (Klee, Tuchin, Bogdanoff & Stern LLP); and Vice-Chairs Matthew Gates (Duff & Phelps, LLC) and Scott Gautier (Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi, LLP).

What the Fund Pays For

Corporate Restructuring Competition
On November 7, a team of students from the Columbia Business School earned top honors at ABI’s Corporate Restructuring Competition, besting 10 other schools and winning the Bettina M. Whyte Trophy for the second time. This 11th annual event was hosted by The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. The prizes for the top three teams — $6,000 for first place, $3,500 for second place, and $2,500 for third place — are provided by ABI’s Anthony H.N. Schnelling Fund. This year a second team from Columbia placed second and Wharton took third place. The students are given a week to solve a complex hypothetical case and present their proposed solutions to judges representing key stakeholders from industry. This year’s competition was chaired by Will Sugden of Alston & Bird LLP, who was assisted by Steve Darr of Mesirow Financial Consulting, LLX, Sage Sigler of Alston & Bird LLP and chair-emeritus Tom Morrow of AlixPartners LLP.
